“The new Faith in America” survey by Deseret News & Marist College highlights that the basic understanding of the role of religion in a secular democracy has become so polarized that 70% of Republicans believe that religion should influence a person’s political values, where as only 28% of Democrats and 45% of independents share that view.”
While there’s absolutely nothing surprising about this, I suspect you’d get a very different result if you asked the question this way.
“Do you believe that the life of Jesus Christ should influence a person’s political values?”
Because it’s not that liberals really think religion can be separated from a person’s politics, it’s because the “religion” that is doing the influencing has little connection to the life of that religion’s founder. We would love for a religion based on the life and teaching of Jesus to influence people’s politics. It influences ours every day.
It reminds me of the time Mike Pence, speaking at a college graduation, said, “It’s becoming hard to call yourself a Christian in America.” Set aside for a moment how ridiculous the comment was. Poor persecuted Mike. He was only the Vice President of the United States at the time. Hell, MTG and Nick Fuentes call themselves Christians.
No, my reply to Mike was, Actually it’s very easy to call yourself a Christian in America. You do it every day.
What’s hard is to actually be a Christian…
