Children with Sparklers in Provincetown (Robert Frank)
Coincidentally I recently scored a copy of Robert Frank’s catalogue for his museum show “hold still…keep going,” a brooding book that echoes Beckett in more than its title. He lost both his daughter in a plane crash in her late teens and his troubled son in the nineties. The book is a pastiche of images from The Americans through Pull My Daisy (and before…and long after)—a record that skips and repeats, with unwieldy handwritten impulses, pleas, second thoughts, scratchings out—life is a dark carnival, and he only incidentally a master artist. Rest In Peace.
