When Bob Moses died last Sunday, Taylor Branch–author of America in the King Years–pointed out on Twitter that Moses was a student of the Constitution.
Branch’s previous tweet–a PDF of a letter to Lynn Cheney written a couple days before the first hearing of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol–also linked America’s first Founders with African American thinkers who helped make America over into a multiracial democracy. RIP Bob Moses, a gentle brave genius who often quoted our “We the People” Preamble. Some day we may appreciate why black leaders like Douglass and Moses are so profoundly engaged in the Constitution. As modern Founders, they mine hope there despite flaws, bigotry, and cynicism.
